Empowering Young Refugees: Challenges and Opportunities Youth Health Forum

Youth Health Forums are stimulating, half-day forums that cover a wide range of adolescent health and wellbeing issues, appealing to health, education, community, welfare professionals and students. The Forum provides an opportunity for attendees to meet, update knowledge and skills, exchange information and strengthen the youth health network, in order to provide the best possible support for young people in NSW. The November Forum will have a focus on supporting young people from refugee backgrounds.

  • Navigating health care, navigating transitions: experiences of the health system for young people of refugee background : Dr Melissa Kang, Associate Professor in Public Health, University of Technology Sydney

  • Untangling colliding nervous systems: Mr Rafik Tanious, School Liaison Counsellor – Project Officer, Rural and Regional NSW, NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS)

  • GROW in the Illawarra: Dr. Smriti Jaiswal, Multicultural Health Officer and Mrs Nyari Garakasha, Refugee Health Clinical Nurse Specialist; Multicultural Health Service, Illawarra and Shoalhaven Local Health District

  • Psychometric assessment with refugees - special considerations: Ms Mary Higson, Coordinator, Psychology Intern Program, Transcultural Mental Health Centre

  • Strength through community: Mr Mayor Chagai, Founder, Savannah Pride

  • Voice of youth: Mr Haji Gundor and Ms Evelyn Agripa, young people

  • Panel discussion: Panel will include all program speakers
