EDA Webinar | The impact of Airbnb on the Australian Housing Market

Australia has one of the least affordable housing markets in the world. Australians have also been highly receptive to Airbnb, a disruptive business which has transformed tourism and has been made possible with increasing globalisation and advances in technology. Airbnb has changed the way people travel and use their homes worldwide.

With local government under more pressure than ever to provide solutions to the housing crises, it is crucial to understand all factors impacting housing availability and affordability, including Airbnb and other forms of short-term rental accommodation.

This webinar will explore how Airbnb as a disruptive innovation, works with capitalism and Australia’s housing market to commodify housing and, therefore, has changed conventional notions of housing and home. It will also demonstrate the need for LGAs to understand Airbnb activity in their region to enable them to respond effectively and balance this often useful addition to tourist accommodation with homes for locals.

Topics covered:

• How Airbnb has thrived in Australia.

• The ways in which Airbnb can impact the housing market.

• How the impacts of Airbnb can be understood in your Local Government Area.
