Telstra Expands Satellite-to-Mobile Connectivity with Select App Access

Staying connected in regional and remote Australia just got a little easier. Telstra has announced that eligible customers can now access a range of select apps through its Satellite to Mobile service, expanding connectivity beyond simple text messaging.

Developed in collaboration with Starlink, the new feature allows eligible customers with compatible devices to use selected messaging, navigation, weather and fitness apps when outside the reach of Telstra's mobile network and connected via satellite.

Supported apps currently include:

  • Apple Maps and Google Maps

  • WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger and Signal

  • Apple Weather, Google Weather and AccuWeather

  • Google Fitness

  • My Telstra App

This technology could be particularly useful for people travelling, working or exploring in regional and remote areas, helping them access directions, weather information and messaging services when traditional mobile coverage is unavailable.

To access the service, customers must be on an eligible Telstra plan, have a compatible device, be outside Telstra mobile coverage and have a clear view of the sky. Compatible devices currently include iPhone 13 and newer models, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S26 device family, with additional devices expected to be supported over time.

While the service provides another way to stay connected, Telstra advises that satellite connectivity is not a replacement for mobile coverage or emergency communications and should not be relied upon for emergency situations.
