Grow Our Own (West) has celebrated another successful month in 2025. March kicked off with the first ‘Behind the School Gates Tour’ of the year, in collaboration with Griffith Business Chamber, hosted at Murrumbidgee Regional High School (Griffith site).

The ‘Behind the School Gates’ event series is a free initiative designed to showcase the innovative programs, state of the art facilities and passionate educators to our local industry. These tour’s also foster a valuable and supportive connection between education providers and local industry. By establishing this connection, we aim to demonstrate that students are more ‘career ready’ than ever. In doing so, we are creating and building a stronger foundation for the future of our local workforce.

This initial event held on 6th March was attended by 30 industry representatives, with outstanding feedback from both the school hosts and industry who attended.  

Grow Our Own (West) wish to thank Duncan Lovelock (Principal), Melina Regusa (Careers Advisor) and the incredibly passionate staff of Murrumbidgee Regional High for the support shown to this new event series, and their ongoing relationship with both the Grown Our Own committee and the extended Griffith business community.   

Registrations are now open for the Term 2 event, to be hosted by Wade High School on 19th June.  

Country Change update | February 2025

Country Change has begun 2025 with a bang, featuring the Murray River and Temora LGAs in January and following that up with Griffith and Narrandera in February. Next up, we have Berrigan Shire featured in March. Make sure you don’t miss out on the great stories we’re showcasing by signing up to the Country Change newsletter.

On February 13 representatives from 15 member LGAs got together with RDA Riverina and Laticia from Blue Clay to discuss the exciting opportunities planned for 2025.

Amongst the usual activities of highlighting the Riverina and Murray regions and why they are such fantastic places to live, there are plans to hold another Country Change Expo, building on the success of last year’s Riverina Discovery Weekend and Country Change Expo. While the exact timing and location of the expo is yet to be determined, we can’t wait to welcome more potential relocators to our region.

Another exciting development for 2025 is Country Change’s involvement in the Sydney Film Festival as an advertising partner of Sydney Film Festival TV. Our films will be shown in Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD over the 12 day festival, which coincides with Vivid Sydney and the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Finally, Country Change is planning a regional photography and videography tour to capture some fresh imagery and footage to add to our extensive collection and help us to keep producing quality content.

The Welcome Experience Expands into Western Riverina

A warm welcome to Maryann Lanelli who has come on board with the expansion phase of the Welcome Experience in the Riverina and has taken the position as the Local Welcomer for Leeton.

Since the launch in of the pilot in June 2023 through to the expansion of The Welcome Experience in the Riverina, the team have made a massive impact. We have helped over 100 essential workers settle into their new regional home in Griffith and Leeton by helping them find housing, childcare, employment opportunities for partners and making introductions to community organisations and locals.

In Griffith new teachers to Marian Catholic College were concierged into community and medical students welcomed during February. All new arrivals have been presented with Welcome Experience Kits packed with local services, amenities and all the information they need to live and connect with the Griffith Community. This service continues to support the delivery of a skilled and robust essential workforce in our region, paving the way for stronger, more resilient communities.

Veterinary workers - including vets, vet nurses, vet technicians and their families can now access The Welcome Experience program in 55 local government areas across the region. The Welcome Experience is part of the $25.1 million Essential Worker Attraction Program, which aims to boost essential workforces in the regions and includes the Make the Move advertising campaign.

Tumut: A Growing Destination for Essential Workers

Tumut is becoming an increasingly popular choice for essential workers, offering a blend of natural beauty, affordable living, and strong community support. Our Local Connector, Jay recently engaged with the Tumut community, providing valuable settlement support to the new Occupational Therapist who joined the Tumut Hospital. Since the start of this year, there has been a notable increase in interest from individuals considering Tumut as their preferred settlement location.

Jay also expressed gratitude to Business Snowy Valleys for the opportunity to present on The Welcome Experience. The feedback from employers, many of whom are grappling with staffing shortages, was overwhelmingly positive. Jay highlighted the importance of being closely connected with the business community, particularly when considering partner employment opportunities - one of the key factors families take into account when making decisions about long-term settlement.

This growing interest in Tumut highlights its appeal as a prime location for essential workers looking for a balance of work, lifestyle, and community.

Building Bridges: Wagga Public School Principals Embrace the Welcome Experience

The Welcome Experience local connector Jay had a discussion with Wagga public school principals highlighting the growing challenge of teacher shortages and the role The Welcome Experience can play in addressing it. Principals are recognising the program’s value in supporting new staff and expressed their commitment to staying connected to enhance their transition.

A special thanks to Jenene McGrath, Director of Education, for her continuous support of The Welcome Experience program. This collaboration marks a significant step towards creating a more welcoming and supportive environment for educators in the Riverina.

Grow Our Own update | February 2025

The first quarter of 2025 has been busy as Grow Our Own industry liaison officers reconnect with careers advisors and workforce providers to firm up our collaborative Riverina calendars.

Each year as schools return, we regroup, ask questions of our stakeholders and wider communities, listening for the needs of our future workforce who are sitting in schools, looking at job, pathway and career opportunities.

Industry experiences are planned across the Riverina in the first half of this year that will inform work experience choices for students to try a trade, see themselves in the world of work, ask better questions and engage in forums and programs that our Riverina providers have in place.

Our steering committees will meet around the table in both Eastern and Western Riverina, to steer the focus of Grow Our Own for 2025 as a foundation for driving Regional NSW to long term sustainable economic success.  

Leeton Shire Council and Hay Shire Council announced as successful applicants of the Growing Regions Program - Round 2

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts recently announced the New South Wales: Growing Regions Program – Round 2 projects.  Leeton Shire Council and Hay Shire Council were among those successful applicants who will receive Commonwealth-approved funding as part of Growing Regions Program – Round 2.

Hay Shire Council will receive funding of $4,191,173 for the replacement of the John Houston Memorial Swimming Pool (JHMS Pool). The project will deliver a new regional aquatic precinct, including a 50-metre competition pool. 15-metre learn-to-swim pool, and a zero-depth beach-style entry children’s pool, new shade and social inclusion areas, change facilities, a solar array and battery energy supply system, and an energy efficient water filtration system.

Leeton Shire Council will receive funding of $800,000 for the Leeton Roxy Theatre- Stage 2 project. This project will complete Stage 2 of the Roxy Community Theatre Redevelopment Masterplan through the delivery of a theatrette, a education studio, and AI/gaming workshop studio, and a function kitchen, café and bar, increasing the venue’s capacity and flexibility and conserve an iconic Art Deco heritage-listed building, and provide a new home for the Roxy Institute of Performing Arts.

The Regional Migration Network Forum in Wagga Wagga was organised by the Regional Australia Institute in partnership with the Wagga Wagga City Council and Regional Development Australia Riverina, and held on 18th June 2024. NSW GROW Riverina Backbone Coordinator, Jayadev Ajayakumar, was honoured to serve on the panel, sharing his experiences and insights on the challenges and solutions to current regional skilled migration system from a migrant’s perspective. From an employer perspective, we were fortunate to have Sue Molyneaux, HR Manager from Casella Family Brands on the panel sharing the challenges faced by employers on finding employees in the Riverina.

The forum provided a crucial platform for discussing various issues, best practices, and policy recommendations related to regional migration and employment systems.

The forum delved into key topics such as:
- Ensuring the right skills come to the right places.
- Balancing the needs of regional communities, local economies, and the migration system.
- Creating employment pathways for regional residents from multicultural backgrounds.
The attendees included regional industries and employers, educational institutions, settlement services providers, and a diverse group of regional migrants including international students, temporary and permanent residents, and new Australians living in regional areas.

The discussions yielded several important takeaways:

- Migration is vital for filling vacancies and enriching the social fabric of our regions.
- A holistic approach, encompassing jobs, infrastructure, services, and community wellbeing, is crucial for supporting migration.
- Beyond economic contributions, migration significantly enhances the overall wellbeing and development of regional areas.
- Research underscores the importance of housing, childcare, welcoming programs, and settlement services in attracting and retaining migrants.

Elecnor Australia Camp Tour | Lockhart

Amanda and Rachel along with RDA Deputy Chair Patrica Wilkinson were fortunate to attend a tour of Elecnor Australia’s camp at Lockhart recently along with a group from REROC. It was very informative to see the way workers are living as they build the high voltage transmission lines for Transgrid as well as the start of the tower build in the east of Project Energy Connect. Riverina Discovery Weekend and Country Change Expo 2024 Report Now Available

A full report including survey results from the 2024 Riverina Discovery Weekend and Country Change Expo is now available.

With approximately 300 people attending the expo and 73 detailed surveys completed after 90 expressions of interest before the event, the expo was hailed a successful first event of this kind in Wagga Wagga.

People attending were very pleased that they came along. The majority of people attending gave the expo experience a 10/10 with an average of 9. 100 % of people said they would encourage others to attend future Riverina Discovery Weekend and Country Change Expos.

Some of the comments from participants about what they would have liked to see at a future expo were:

• More service clubs, arts groups and other exhibits with

• More people to speak to about the region.

People attending the Welcome to Wagga event hosted by Committee4Wagga loved it. It was the largest welcome event Committee4Wagga have hosted. The venue of the Riverside Precinct at Wagga Beach was a hit, showcasing the natural beauty of the Murrumbidgee River and the extensive landscaping with BBQ, picnic area and playground Wagga Wagga City Council have invested in.

Tours were conducted by bus to Temora and Leeton. Self-drive tours for Wagga Wagga and Snowy Valleys were advertised. Murrumbidgee Trails points of visitation were marketed at the Country Change Expo.

"Until coming here and experiencing this, I didn’t know what a regional lifestyle looked like. But now, it's the place I want to permanently call home”.

The Grass is Greener with Griffith Connection

With the community behind you, the grass can be greener on the other side.

For 200+ new arrivals to Griffith since 2023, this sign has come in the shape of Griffith Connection; a series of social networking events that bring together new members of our community with locals to share the unique opportunities and quality liveability that our region has to offer.

Geared towards supporting new workers to find their footing here, Griffith Connection is a joint venture of the Griffith Business Chamber, Griffith City Council and Regional Development Australia Riverina.

“As a community, we not only need new workers to move to Griffith – we also need them to stay.  The success of this model has been built on a mix of collaboration from individuals, families, community organisations and businesses whose aim is to build trust in existing and new social and recreational networks that welcome new workers to town,” said John Nikolic, President Griffith Business Chamber.

In the latest instalment of the event series, Griffith Pioneer Park and Museum hosted and treated over 70 new arrivals, their families and welcoming locals to fresh made pizza, bocce and other sports on the lawns of the Italian Museum. The crowd pleaser of Sunday’s event was the guided train tour giving new arrivals an insight into the highlights of our multicultural heritage and workforce and its influence on our regional city.

Each event is designed to showcase Griffith’s assets with previous well attended events at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery, Griffith Regional Theatre and ROR. Attendees have come away with contacts for daycare services, recreational activities, work opportunities, new community and education connections and new friends. As a 6-yr old new arrival from Sudan excitedly exclaimed on Sunday, 'I am so happy, I have made my first new friend!'

With strong support and collaboration from Griffith Business Chamber and Griffith City Council, Griffith Connection has become an integral and evolving part of The Griffith Welcome Experience managed by RDA Riverina.

Riverina Discovery Weekend and Country Change Expo 2024

We would like to extend a big thank you to organisations and individuals who supported the Riverina Discovery Weekend and Country Change Expo on the 20th and 21st April. The weather was perfect and the expo attracted a diverse crowd, with visitors from Sydney, other capital cities, and inquisitive locals engaging with employers and exploring various industry opportunities.

We had around 300 people attend the expo and 73 detailed surveys were completed. People attending were very pleased that they came along. The majority of people attending gave the expo experience a 10/10 with an average of 9/10. 100% of people said they would encourage others to attend future Riverina Discovery Weekend and Country Change Expos.

Atendees were able to explore real estate opportunities in the Riverina through McGrath Riverina, builders and housing solutions through HIA, NGH Consulting and Heuldins, education pathways with Charles Sturt University and TAFE and an understanding of opportunities in the greater region through the Country Change, Temora Shire and Griffith Welcome Experience stands. The free coffee for surveys at nearby cafes was well received by local business and those attending the expo.

The Riverina Discovery weekend consisted of more than the just a regional lifestyle expo. RDA Riverina were very pleased to partner with Committee4Wagga for the Welcome to Wagga event at the Riverside Precinct at Wagga Beach. This location was an excellent fit for welcoming newcomers and showing off the river to potential relocators.

As part of the NSW GROW pilot program, we welcomed a busload of people from Sydney interested in relocating to the Riverina. These potential relocators attended the expo and the Welcome to Wagga event before touring Leeton and Temora on Sunday. Self-drive tours were advertised for Wagga Wagga and Snowy Valleys.

Our partnership with Workforce Australia's Local Jobs Program also saw Sureway speaking to clients and other local and potential relocator jobs seekers about opportunities in the region. They also utilised the opportunity to link job seekers to the business that attended searching for staff such as Murrumbidgee Local Health District, Proway and Flipscreen.

The Country Change program previously covered the Riverina region and, thanks to this funding, has now expanded to cover the Murray region, in collaboration with RDA Murray. The Country Change program is a joint marketing effort between RDA Riverina, local governments, and other partners like Committee4Wagga, to address workforce development in the region. It works in tandem with RDA Riverina's other projects, including Jobs Riverina Murray, The Welcome Experience Griffith, and the NSW Growing Regions of Welcome pilot.

Summer 2023-2024 Country Change Magazine Out Now!

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Riverina is excited to announce the launch of the latest edition of the Country Change magazine featuring a major rebrand. The branding update brings an expanded fresh new look and feel to the program. Additionally, a new redeveloped Country Change website with updated branding, expanded features and enhanced user experience is set to launch soon.

The Country Change campaign, jointly funded by RDA Riverina and partnering members, continues to be a vital initiative in attracting new residents and businesses to the Riverina. The program has recently extended its reach to include the Murray region, in partnership with RDA Murray. This expansion has been made possible through funding as part of Transgrid and RDA Riverina’s $1.5 million Workforce Development Strategic Partnership. This Strategic Partnership also supports the Jobs Riverina Murray platform, a perfect complement to the Country Change program, helping newcomers find employment opportunities.

The Country Change program has long been a cornerstone of our efforts to promote the Riverina region as an ideal destination for families and businesses seeking a change of pace, with new opportunities now extending to include the Murray region. With its updated branding and coming website, we aim to continue facilitating connections between newcomers and the vibrant communities of the Riverina and Murray.

The refreshed branding and magazine will be launched today at Griffith Connection, a social networking collective that welcomes new workers to town and keeps them updated on what’s happening in Griffith. Griffith Connection is a proud partnership of Griffith City Council, Griffith Business Chamber and The Griffith Welcome Experience, a pilot program funded by the Department of Regional NSW. At its core, the Griffith Welcome Experience provides essential government workers and their families with the support they need to move into regional communities, settle in and become one of the locals. Marg Couch, our dedicated Local Connector based in Griffith, is ready help with any questions you have about life in the region.

2022-2023 Land Monitor Report Release

The 2022-2023 edition of the Wagga Land Monitor Report has been released. This report provides a summary of the supply and demand of vacant land in Wagga Wagga.

RDA Riverina in partnership with AusIndustry and Charles Sturt University, AgriPark presented an update on economic development activities and trends across the Riverina at a recent Development Officer Forum in Wagga Wagga, last Thursday (30th November 2023).

The day began in the Riverina Local Land Services building, where attendees heard from Ray Willis (General Manager of Riverina LLS), Amanda Cappello (Operations Manager, Regional Development Australia Riverina), Rachel Whiting (CEO and Director of Regional Development at Regional Development Australia Riverina), Nicola James (Regional Manager South West NSW AusIndustry), Nick Pagett (Executive Director Charles Sturt - AgriPark), and Jim Hutchinson (Community and Stakeholder Engagement Lead, Transgrid). Following presentations, attendees relocated to the Global Digital Farm showcase room where Jonathan Medway (Senior Research Fellow Spatial Agriculture at Charles Sturt University) explained the integrated digital learning, innovation and research environment working within a full scale, commercial, mixed farm operation. Attendees were then invited to experience a Meat Tasting held by the Red Meat Innovation Centre, followed by lunch and a roundtable.

NSW GROW Moving to the Riverina Flyer

RDA Riverina, in collaboration with the NSW Government Growing Regions of Welcome pilot program, has produced a flyer highlighting the benefits of moving to the Riverina.

The flyer highlights the job opportunities, lifestyle benefits, welcoming communities and assistance available through the pilot program, operating in the Leeton Shire Council and Temora Shire Council areas.
