The new format Taste Riverina means operators can hold seasonal events and experiences at any time of

the year. We encourage you to create events that focus on the Taste Riverina values of supporting local,

educating, innovating and collaborating.

Out-of-region expansion

We are bringing Taste Riverina to key metro areas. Taste Riverina has a significant following from ACT, VIC

and NSW residents who are hungry for more food, drinks and experiences straight from the Riverina.

Taste Riverina goes to Canberra

First up on the list for promotion in metro areas is Canberra and we have chosen Handmade Canberra.

Handmade Canberra is Canberra’s largest indoor market and in 2018 celebrated 10 years of successful

events. Handmade Canberra attracts over 130,000 visitors each year, with the March event regularly

bringing in over 20,000 people.

When and where is the Handmade market?

The first Handmade market of 2019 will be held between 23 – 24 March at Exhibition Park in Canberra

(EPIC), Flemington Rd, Lyneham ACT 2602

What is so great about Handmade?

Handmade is a carefully curated market featuring quality Australian and handmade products and produce.

Digital channels have amassed a loyal following of over 55,000 people, with a monthly website audience of

just under 13,000.

In addition to promising promotional channels, Handmade is a great choice for operators looking to sell

products, as total turnover for each market is around $5 million.

Who goes to Handmade?

Market demographics are closely aligned to Taste Riverina audiences with 59% aged between 25 - 44 years

old. The majority of the Handmade audience is based in Canberra, followed by Sydney and Melbourne.

Operators will promote and sell their products/services over 2 days within a dedicated Taste Riverina area.

2018 RDA Riverina Snapshot

I hope that you are all able to slow down a little over the Christmas break and enjoy some time with friends and family.

I understand the pressures associated with this as our region is booming and the opportunities are great.

 

In 2018, RDA Riverina have put our efforts to places where we have seen the greatest need:

1. Workforce Development - Our region needs skilled workers.  Our numbers show there is a need for up to 10,000 more people in the Riverina in the next 2-3 years and that doesn't count Snowy Hydro 2.0's anticipated demand.

We've done this through Grow Our Own, Country Change and Skilled Migration.

We have also worked on assisting all these avenues with the free jobsite for employers and employees Jobs Riverina.

These programs have challenges, but I am confident that more opportunities will arise and we are making a difference. 

2. Data and information - RDA Riverina started the year with releasing our RDA Riverina Regional Profile .This is just the beginning, we can provide you with information that fits your business or organisation's needs.  Check out Professional Services page to learn more about our Economic and Event Impact analysis and other services we can provide.

 

We've also worked to assist others including Thrive Riverina, Taste Riverina and local councils with Tourism projects and we are especially excited to be working with Destination Riverina Murray to run a Tourism Accelerator program in the New Year.  Our goal is to create a strong, confident and vibrant region and to work across all levels of government to increase economic development opportunities.  If we can help you, please ask us.

 

By January we hope to have our new Chair announced.  We thank our Chairs for 2018, Miriam Dayhew and our current Acting Chair Kerry Penton for their commitment and hard work.  We are very pleased to have recently announced our new committee and to have had a farewell and thank you dinner for our retiring committee members.

We are sad to be farewelling our fantastic Research Officer Elliot Lee.  Elliot came to us as a Mathematics graduate from the University of Newcastle last 2017.  The work he has done for us and our partners is fabulous and we wish him all the best as he pursues his dream of teaching maths at the Riverina Anglican College in 2019.  We are currently searching for a new Research Officer.  Please click here for more information.

Opportunity to Join the RDA Riverina Team: Research Officer

Regional Development Australia – Riverina is part of a national initiative charged with economic development across our regions.  This is achieved through building partnerships and ensuring that all governments and stakeholders are responsive to local regional priorities and needs.  RDA Riverina is a conduit between government and local communities and a provider of information.

Stretching 500km from east to west across south-central NSW, the RDA Riverina region covers almost 80,000 square kilometres.  The region is home to 170,000 people (2016 Census), many who rely on the region’s largest employer – agriculture – for their livelihood. The region encompasses 14 local government areas and is home to the major centres of the City of Wagga Wagga and City of Griffith.

RDA Riverina wish to employ a Research Officer to join the team in the Wagga Wagga office.  This position is initially a contract until December 31st, 2019 with opportunity for extension if funding allows.  This position could be a full time or part time role, we want to be flexible to find the right person to be our Research Officer.  We are open to this being a graduate position or for someone returning to the workforce.  School hours would also work for this position.  Remuneration will be negotiated in accordance with the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

 Position Overview

The Research Officer will be responsible for providing research and administrative support to the RDA Committee and to the Director of Regional Development / CEO to ensure the effective and efficient operation of RDA Riverina.

Principal Responsibilities

  • REMPLAN database and statistics administration

  • Interpreting data

  • Library/Internet searching

  • Writing summaries of research notes

  • Information processing

  • Entering data in reports, spreadsheets,

  • Organise meetings, schedules etc for data collection

  • Posting and responding to appropriate social media

  • Meeting with other organisations

  • Other duties as directed by the Director of Regional Development / CEO.

Capabilities

It is expected that the successful applicant for this position will have the following capabilities:

  • An ability to achieve goals and priorities, and undertake work without continuous direct supervision.

  • High level of computer literacy skills, including demonstrated experience in word processing, spreadsheets, social media and database management

  • A high work ethic and willingness to help out other members of the work team.

  • A willingness to request help and/or guidance when it may be required.

  • Professional skills, particularly regarding professional discretion and maintaining confidentiality as required.

Physical Capabilities

Consideration should also be given to areas such as:

  • Sitting for long periods at a computer desk.

  • Current open driving licence essential

 Selection Criteria

Applicants are expected to address the selection criteria when applying for this position. 

Essential

  1. Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma level qualification with relevant work-related experience; or a certificate level qualification with post-certificate relevant work experience; or Year 12 and normally at least 3-4 years' relevant work experience; or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience

  2. Proven proficiency in library and Internet searching for literature/data/information

  3. Demonstrated expertise in using Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word

  4. Capacity to manage data and statistics

  5. An excellent grasp of both written and spoken English

  6. An ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision

  7. Sound administrative skills

  8. Current driving licence

Desirable

  1. Demonstrated expertise in using data management software

At the ACBC Business Forum in March 2018, the Hon. Niall Blair announced he would attend the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) in November. Following his visit to China, he will be our keynote speaker at the 2018 Australia-China Trade Summit.

Research and Innovation on the Ag-genda on National Agriculture Day

Three local organisations who drive agricultural innovation joined forces on National Agriculture Day to recognise the contribution of our farmers and the role of research in helping them ‘’Grow for Good”.

RDA Riverina Chief Executive Officer, Ms Rachel Whiting said days like this highlight the importance and the need to celebrate all that is positive in our sector.

“People in our cities can forget where our food comes from. The Riverina produces one third of NSW’s fruit, vegetables and nuts, half of NSW’s wine grape production and one eighth of all other agricultural production in NSW.  We need days like National Ag Day as a reminder to all of what agriculture does for us,” said Ms Whiting.

A National Agriculture Day celebration in Wagga Wagga has highlighted research and innovation as key ingredients to ensure the long-term viability of our rural industries. More than 100 people gathered at Charles Sturt University (CSU) for the annual event, embracing the theme ‘Grow For Good’.

AgriFutures Australia, the Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation and Regional Development of Australia (RDA) Riverina NSW fired up the BBQ and celebrated alongside farmers, producers, researchers, students and all who contribute to our agricultural industry.

AgriFutures Australia General Manager, Research and Innovation Michael Beer said it was a unique take on the theme.

“The world population is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030. How we continue to feed the world, and to do so in a sustainable way will require research. We took this year’s theme of ‘Grow for Good’ and highlighted the importance of research and innovation in the quest to feed more people and produce safe, affordable and nutritious foods,” said Mr Beer.

Acting Director of the Graham Centre, Associate Professor Marta Hernandez-Jover said it was also an opportunity to do some good.

“We wanted this event to shine a light on the importance of agriculture while making a positive difference to those who are experiencing drought,” said Professor Hernandez-Jover.

Gold coin donations went towards the NSW Country Women’s Association drought relief effort.

National Agriculture Day is a National Farmers’ Federation initiative. More than 100 events were held at locations across Australia to celebrate agriculture, the largest employer in many of Australia’s rural and remote communities.

A special thanks to Big Springs Water and the Junee Rotary Club for their support of this year’s National Agriculture Day event in Wagga Wagga.

Richie Robinson, General Manager of Destination Riverina Murray says, “the 12-week Program is an excellent resource based on the very successful Riverina Regional Business Accelerator, developed by Voyager Strategy's Director John Hemphill and delivered by RDA Riverina in 2017, which led to impressive sales and job growth for those businesses who took part.” Tourism operators have the opportunity to apply for the 12-week business accelerator program. “The unique aspect of this program is the balance of group workshops, individual online learning and one-on-one mentor assistance” says Rachel Whiting CEO and Director of Regional Development from RDA Riverina. “We are very pleased to be working with Voyager Strategies again to run this program for Destination Riverina Murray due to the great response from the businesses involved in the 2017 accelerator”.

RDA Riverina have been engaged by Destination Riverina Murray to deliver the Riverina Murray Regional Tourism Business Accelerator program in 2018/19.  This program is made available to Tourism Operators at a much reduced cost due to Destination Riverina Murray’s successful bid for Building Better Regions Communities Funding announced a few months ago.  RDA Riverina are thrilled to be delivering another Accelerator with Voyager Strategies and in partnership with Griffith, Wagga Wagga and Albury City Councils and RDA Murray.

The Federal Government has announced funding of $1.36m to build new regional study sites to serve both Griffith and Leeton.

The Federal Government has announced funding of $1.36m to build new regional study sites to serve both Griffith and Leeton.

Local MP Sussan Ley said the move is great news for students seeking distance education options at university, with new ‘hubs’ at Griffith and Leeton supporting those who wanted, or needed, to stay at ‘home’ for their study.

“Set up by the Country Universities Centre, the sites will provide study space, internet and video conferencing access, administrative, and academic support,” Ms Ley said.

Griffith City Council General Manager, Brett Stonestreet, said the hub would make a massive difference to the lives of students, their families and communities across the region.

“This is wonderful news for Griffith and the surrounding communities. It will provide greater access to higher education and more opportunities for our students,” Mr Stonestreet said.

“Anyone with the desire and capability to attend university will now have the opportunity to do so regardless of their background or where they live. This helps improve educational attainment, skills development, and employment opportunities for local students.”

An application was submitted by Country Universities NSW on behalf of several sites in NSW, with the Griffith/Leeton Hub one of the successful applications.

Duncan Taylor CEO of Country Universities NSW said the community-owned regional study hub model has the potential of revolutionising tertiary education in country areas.

“We’re really seeing some significant results in communities where we have already established study hubs, so naturally we’re thrilled the Federal Government is enabling us to expand this successful model,” he said.

The Morrison Government is providing $24.2 million over four years to help establish or expand 16 Regional Study Hubs at 22 locations throughout Australia.

As part of a commitment to boost post-secondary education in rural areas, $34m has also been allocated to
provide an extra 2000 scholarships for regional students, bringing the total additional new funding for regional higher education to $400 million over five years.

Women's Horticulture Leadership skills Scholarship

Hort Innovation and Women and Leadership Australia (WLA) are offering a new round of funding for women in horticulture looking to develop their leadership skills, with applications now open to receive leadership development scholarships with a value of up to $10,941.

The leadership development scholarships offer funding for women who work in levy-paying horticultural businesses to take part in one of three courses offered by WLA.

These three courses have been tailored to suit women across three key management levels:

  • Accelerated Leadership Performance Program is a four-month course for early-career managers and emerging leaders.

  • Executive Ready program is a seven-month course for women with mid-level management and leadership experience.

  • Advanced Leadership Program is a 12-month course for senior and executive-level women.

To be eligible women must be employed by a levy paying business in the hort sector. 

The courses are specifically designed to fit around your existing employment and are delivered via a ‘blended’ teaching model that incorporates online and face-to-face components.

Each scholarship available through this funding is a partial scholarship that covers almost 60 per cent of the fee for each program, leaving a residual payment for successful applicants. The scholarships will be awarded based on a set of selection criteria being met.

Funding is limited and must be apportioned by the end of this calendar year.

National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy Industry Focus Groups

Opportunity to participate in Focus Groups to help inform the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy

The Taskforce leading the development of the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy (the Strategy) will be hosting industry focus groups around Australia in November and December 2018 to test key elements recommended for the Strategy, including the proposed National Action Plan (NAP).

All levels of government have been collaborating to develop a Strategy capable of delivering a productive, competitive, safe and secure freight system.

 The Taskforce wishes to engage with you to ensure that the Strategy and NAP capture industry input already received and to give you an opportunity to provide further feedback as we develop the Strategy for endorsement by governments in the New Year.

 The Focus Groups

  • Provide you with a brief overview of the Strategy and NAP and how it will addresses industry priorities identified by the Inquiry into National Freight and Supply Chain Priorities .

  • Explain how the Strategy links with state and territory freight initiatives and other work underway.

  • Test the structure and direction of the NAP with you through facilitated

  • Discuss government and industry’s role in implementing the Strategy and

  • Seek your feedback on further areas for consideration.

Agri-Business and Carbon Farming Public Consultations

Public consultations occurring around Australia

The review and development of Agribusiness and Carbon Farming qualifications as part of the AHC Agriculture, Amenity Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package is now at the next stage of the project.

 The initial development work on the Agri-business and Carbon Farming project has now been completed. The Subject Matter Experts (SME) meetings were held during September, with people who work directly in the Carbon Farming and Agribusiness Industry being consulted to help clarify job roles, tasks and identify any skills gaps. The SME’s have now provided further feedback on the initial draft work.

 The dates for the face to face public consultation workshops to be held around Australia have now been announced and will take place across a number of states and territories, with a webinar planned for those unable to attend in person.

 You can now register your interest to attend these workshops to provide further input which will help define the qualification, skill sets and units of competency.

 The revised draft qualifications, skill sets and units will be made available on this webpage for public consideration and feedback from November 2018 (under the project ‘Drafts Available’ menu).

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Riverina has a new committee to help develop the Riverina as a strong, confident and vibrant region.

Regional Development Australia (RDA) is a national network of Committees comprising local leaders who work with all levels of government, business and community groups to support the economic development of their regions.

With a clear focus on harnessing the competitive advantages of their regions, seizing on economic opportunity and attracting investment, RDA Committees deliver the RDA Charter as announced by then Minister for Regional Development, Senator Fiona Nash in August 2017.

RDA Riverina engages with regional business, councils and industry sectors to work towards sustainable growth for the region. Current RDA Riverina programs include workforce development initiatives such as Jobs Riverina, Country Change and Skilled Migration; supporting Taste Riverina and Grow Our Own Western Riverina; and providing regional statistics, demographic data, economic impact analysis and other support for projects and grant applications.

The new RDA Riverina Committee consists of three returning members:

Nominations now open for the 2019 Australian Biosecurity Awards

The search has begun for Australia’s true biosecurity champions

Today the search begins for Australia’s true biosecurity champions through the 2019 Australian Biosecurity Awards.

Head of biosecurity at the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, Lyn O’Connell, said the annual Biosecurity Awards are an important recognition of Australians making significant contributions to our world leading biosecurity status.

“These awards acknowledge those who have worked closely with the department and made outstanding efforts that reduce the risk of exotic pests and diseases entering Australia,” Ms O’Connell said.

“Our strict conditions protect our $60 billion agricultural industries, as well as our unique environment, native flora and fauna, our tourism industries and lifestyle.

“Biosecurity is a shared responsibility and we want to applaud the efforts of those supporting and promoting the systems which uphold it.

“There will be four award categories in 2019: the Australian Biosecurity Award – Industry; the Australian Biosecurity Award – Government; the David Banks Biosecurity Lifetime Achievement Award; and, the Farm Biosecurity Producer of the Year Award.”

Nominations are now open and close on Friday 9 November 2018.

The 2019 Australian Biosecurity Awards will be presented in conjunction with the Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as part of the ABARES Outlook Conference in Canberra in March 2019.

The Australian Government has announced $200 million in the 2018–19 Budget for Round Three of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF). To help regions unlock their tourism potential, up to $45 million has been earmarked for tourism related infrastructure projects that will help stimulate local economies by investing in the tourism sector.

The $641.6 million BBRF supports the Australian Government’s commitment to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.

For Round 3, $200 million is available, with up to $45 million of this funding earmarked to support tourism related infrastructure projects.

There are two streams of funding available under the program:

Infrastructure Projects Stream

The Infrastructure Projects Stream supports projects which involve the construction of new infrastructure, or the upgrade or extension of existing infrastructure that provide economic and social benefits to regional and remote areas.

Community Investments Stream

The Community Investments Stream funds the following community activities, new or expanded local events, strategic regional plans, and leadership and capability strengthening activities These projects will deliver economic and social benefits to regional and remote communities. Infrastructure activities are not eligible for the Community Investments Stream.
